Sensory Impairment Care at Home

Sensory impairment refers to reduced or absent function of the senses, most commonly sight and hearing. Visual impairment ranges from partial sight to total blindness, while hearing impairment ranges from mild hearing loss to profound deafness. Some people have both, a condition sometimes called deafblindness.

Sensory impairment is often present alongside other health conditions, including age-related conditions, stroke, acquired brain injury, or learning disability.

When this is the case, care needs become more complex and require carers who can communicate effectively, adapt their approach, and provide consistent, reliable support that the person can anticipate and trust.

When is specialist care at home the right choice?

You may be considering specialist care at home if your loved one:

  • Has a significant visual or hearing impairment and needs support with daily living
  • Has both sight and hearing impairment and requires specialist communication approaches
  • Has sensory impairment alongside other complex health or care needs
  • Has become less safe at home as a result of their impairment and needs consistent support
  • Needs carers who are patient, consistent and able to adapt communication to their needs

How our care supports people and families

  • Carers trained in effective communication for people with visual or hearing impairment
  • Consistent, familiar carers who the person can learn to recognise and trust
  • Care plans built around the individual’s communication style, preferences and daily routines
  • Support with daily tasks adapted to the person’s sensory needs
  • Nurse oversight and review when health or safety concerns arise
  • Coordination with vision or hearing specialists, GPs and other professionals
  • A calm, structured approach that reduces anxiety and disorientation

What support may include

Care packages are built around individual assessment. Depending on the person’s needs, support may include:

  • Personal care including washing, dressing and oral hygiene
  • Meal preparation and nutrition support
  • Orientation and safe navigation support in the home
  • Medication support and prompting
  • Assistance with appointments and communications
  • Companionship and engagement adapted to the person’s communication needs
  • Safety monitoring and fall prevention support

Arranging sensory impairment care at home
