Cerebral Palsy Care at Home

Cerebral palsy is a group of permanent conditions affecting movement, muscle tone and coordination, caused by damage to the developing brain before, during or shortly after birth. The effects vary widely between individuals.

Some people with cerebral palsy have mild coordination difficulties while others have complex physical, communication and health needs requiring significant daily support.

In addition to the physical effects of cerebral palsy, some individuals also have associated conditions including epilepsy, learning disability, speech and communication differences, visual impairment, and swallowing difficulties. Care needs must be understood and planned around the whole person.

When is specialist care at home the right choice?

You may be considering specialist cerebral palsy care at home if:

  • Your loved one has cerebral palsy with complex care needs that standard home care cannot safely manage
  • Clinical procedures such as enteral feeding, seizure management or catheter care are part of the daily routine
  • Your loved one is transitioning to adult services and continuity of care is important
  • There have been changes in health or mobility that have increased care needs
  • Family carers need consistent, specialist support alongside them

  • Enteral feeding support where swallowing is affected
  • Seizure management and medication support
  • Catheter or bowel care where continence is affected
  • Positioning support and pressure area care

  • Waking and sleeping night care where needed

Arranging cerebral palsy care at home

If your loved one has cerebral palsy and you are looking at specialist care at home, please contact us. We will take the time to understand what their specific needs are, what has worked well in previous care arrangements, and what a well-planned, nurse-supervised package would look like for them.
