Respite Care at Home in Sussex and Surrey

Respite care is short-term or temporary care that steps in to give primary carers a break from their caregiving responsibilities. It allows family members, spouses or other unpaid carers to rest, attend to their own needs, or manage other aspects of life, knowing that the person they care for is being looked after properly in the meantime.

At CareLink Direct, respite care is not a generic cover arrangement. Because we work with people with complex and serious health needs, our respite carers are trained for the specific procedures and support that the person requires. Nothing is left to chance, and no carer goes into a respite package without knowing exactly what is needed.

Respite care can be arranged as a one-off period of cover, as regular planned breaks, or as an ongoing arrangement to give family carers sustained relief.

When is the right time to consider respite care?

There is no single right moment, and many family carers wait longer than they should before asking for help. If you are the main carer for someone with complex health needs and you are feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or simply like you need time to be yourself again, that is reason enough.

You might consider respite care if:

  • You are the primary carer for a family member with complex health needs and need a break
  • You have personal responsibilities, appointments or commitments that are difficult to manage alongside caregiving
  • You are approaching carer burnout and want to put a sustainable arrangement in place before things become critical
  • Your loved one’s needs have increased and you need support to manage them safely
  • You want regular planned breaks built into the care arrangement going forward

How respite care supports family carers

  • Proper, planned rest without worrying that care standards will drop in your absence
  • Carers who are trained specifically for your loved one’s needs, not a generic cover arrangement
  • Continuity for the person being cared for, who sees familiar processes and consistent care
  • Flexible scheduling that fits around your needs, whether occasional or regular
  • Nurse oversight so clinical needs continue to be managed safely
  • Peace of mind that someone qualified is watching over your loved one’s health
  • The space to look after your own health, relationships and wellbeing

What respite care services may include

Depending on your loved one’s needs, respite care from CareLink Direct may include:

  • Personal care including washing, dressing and oral hygiene
  • Medication support as prescribed
  • Clinical procedures such as catheter care, stoma care or enteral feeding, where these form part of the usual care plan
  • Vital signs monitoring where appropriate
  • Meal preparation and nutrition support
  • Companionship and wellbeing support
  • Waking night or sleeping night care where overnight cover is needed
  • Live-in care for longer respite periods

Arranging respite care

Arranging respite care for someone with complex health needs requires a proper handover and preparation, not a last-minute booking. We work with families to understand the full care plan before respite begins, so that there is no gap in the quality or safety of care.
