Bowel Care at Home
Bowel Care at Home
Managing bowel health is a fundamental part of wellbeing, and when complex needs are involved, specialist clinical support makes an important difference. CareLink Direct provides nurse-supervised bowel care at home across Sussex and Surrey, supporting people with dignity, consistency and proper clinical oversight.
Bowel Care at Home
Bowel care covers a range of clinical interventions and support strategies aimed at maintaining healthy, regular bowel function. For people with spinal cord injury, neurological conditions or other complex health needs, the bowel may not function independently, and clinical intervention is required to keep the bowel working safely and prevent complications such as constipation, overflow or autonomic dysreflexia.

Bowel care at CareLink Direct includes a range of approaches, which are determined by individual assessment and prescribed by the clinical team. For some people, this involves dietary and fluid support alongside other interventions. For others, it involves clinical procedures such as digital rectal examination and manual evacuation, which are carried out by trained carers under nurse supervision.
When is specialist bowel care needed at home?
Specialist bowel care at home is most commonly needed for people with conditions affecting bowel function, including spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, acquired brain injury and other neurological conditions.
You may be considering bowel care support at home if your loved one:
- Has a spinal cord injury, neurological condition or other health problem affecting bowel function
- Requires a structured bowel programme to maintain regular and safe bowel emptying
- Is experiencing constipation, bowel impaction or discomfort
- Has been discharged from hospital with a bowel management plan that requires clinical support
- Currently receives bowel care from community nursing services that cannot be sustained at the required frequency

How our bowel care support helps families
- Consistent, dignified bowel care delivered by trained carers under nurse supervision
- Bowel programmes built around individual assessment and clinical prescription
- Digital rectal examination and manual evacuation carried out by competency-signed-off carers
- Regular monitoring for signs of complication, discomfort or change
- Clear documentation of bowel function and interventions
- Escalation to the nurse team or GP if the pattern changes significantly
- Care that preserves dignity and respects the person’s privacy at all times
Digital rectal examination and manual evacuation
For some people, a bowel programme includes digital rectal examination, which involves a trained carer assessing the rectum to check for faecal loading, and manual evacuation, which involves the careful removal of faecal matter when natural emptying cannot occur.
These are clinical procedures that require specific training, competency sign-off and nurse supervision. They are carried out with careful attention to technique, comfort and dignity, and are documented fully after each episode.
Not all home care agencies are trained or equipped to provide these procedures. CareLink Direct’s team receives specific training in bowel care, and no carer carries out these procedures without appropriate preparation and ongoing supervision.
